Ignition interlock devices in Alabama prevent drivers convicted of DUI charges from being able to start their vehicles if they have had too much to drink. The state of Alabama began requiring certain drivers to use such devices starting in 2011. The alcohol limit for not being able to start a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device is extremely low, according to Alabama DUI lawyer John Michael Barclay. Specifically, the device will not allow drivers to start a vehicle if their blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds 0.02 percent. That means most drivers cannot have more than one alcoholic drink in one hour. Otherwise, the vehicle will not start.
Drivers who have been convicted of DUI in Alabama twice or more within the past five years must have an interlock device installed in their vehicle. First time DUI offenders must also install such devices if their blood alcohol content was 0.15 percent or greater when they were arrested. Drivers with a BAC over 0.15 percent are also subject to the double minimum punishment law, which doubles the fines and jail time for convicted offenders, even if it's the driver's first conviction. Such strict standards illustrate the severity of the consequences of a DUI conviction in Alabama.
"Can I appeal an order to drive with ignition interlock device in Alabama?"
Such a device might seem like a nuisance. But the alternative can often be worse. If you don't have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle in Alabama, you could lose your driver's license for 90 days or even longer. That's why many people choose to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle and forgo appealing the judge's decision.
